We also have up to three junior doctors working for us in their registrar years. These are fully qualified doctors, who have been working for at least a year and often much more, and who are with us for a period of time to learn specifically about working in general practice.
We have two practice nurses who, besides being involved in the chronic disease and lifestyle clinics, also give advice on health matters and provide skilled nursing care. Both nurses are trained in cervical cytology.
Health Care Assistants
We have two Health Care Assistants who run smoking cessations clinics, weight management and phlebotomy clinics. In addition, they see all new patients for their initial check-up and see all patients for blood pressure monitoring.
Please note that anyone can refer to the district nurse team including patients and carers. You do not need to see a doctor first.
Please contact them on the following number for advice or help: 020 8320 3550
The district nurses provide nursing care for housebound patients with acute illnesses, post-operative care needs and chronic illness or disability.
They are also very involved in care for terminally ill patients, providing nursing and co-ordinating care from other agencies.
The receptionists are trained to listen to your needs, requests and queries. They take and pass on messages. They can give you information about the practice and facilities. They also make appointments appropriate to your assessment of urgency.
Please remember that if the receptionist needs to ask you questions, they are carrying out our policy which is aimed at making the practice run smoothly. They have been told to elicit information and are not being nosey. They are bound by the same rules of confidentiality as the doctors and nurses.
Administration Team - Practice Administrator
Jackie Hobson is the Practice Administrator. Her duties and responsibilities are varied and include liaising with the CCG and various other outside agencies as well as managing the staff, dealing with any patient suggestions and any non-clinical complaints.
Sue Smith is our Administrative Clerk and is supported by two secretaries, Jennie Dixon and Dawn Hutchings and clerical/admin assistant, Cheryl Evans. Their roles are varied and include dealing with queries from the Health Authority, typing, completion of reports for solicitors and/or insurance companies.
Midwives now see patients from this surgery at Sherington Children’s Centre, Sherington Road, Charlton, SE7. This change is in line with moving midwives into children’s centres to make them more visible and available to women and their families.
The midwives can be contacted on 020 8331 3260
The practice is enthusiastically involved in training GP registrars.
Within the practice there are two approved trainers, Dr N Patel and Dr B Yousif, but the whole team is included in training in some way. We feel that with the experience and the enthusiasm of both trainers and non-trainers alike, the skill mix, and huge resource within the practice that is the patients, the opportunities for learning are now enormous.
Medical Student Teaching
The practice is enthusiastically involved in teaching final year undergraduate medical students from King's College Medical School.
Students come to The Blackheath Standard Surgery to gain experience in General Practice, but also just to learn the basics, like how to talk to patients, how to take a medical history and examination techniques.
